Promoting British Values at Hugglescote Community Primary School

The Department of Education has recently reinforced the need:

To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation in all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated by the Prime Minister in 2014. At Hugglescote these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

Each year the children decide upon their ‘class rules’. All children contribute to the drawing up of the class rules in partnership with their teacher. These rules are then displayed in the classroom alongside the School Rules. To ensure these rules are followed, there is a ‘Traffic Light’ behaviour system in place to allow teachers to manage behaviour in a consistent and effective way.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind the laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the police, the fire service, the town mayor, etc. are a regular part of our calendar and help reinforce this message, as does the home-school agreement which is signed by all families.

Individual Liberty

At Hugglescote, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are given the freedom to make choices, for example, whether it is through choice of activity or challenge, how they record their learning/work, or by choosing to participate in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities.

Mutual Respect

One of our school's core beliefs reinforces the high importance of mutual respect at Hugglescote by valuing each other as individuals and respecting each other’s differences.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Hugglescote encourages tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs and this is supported through assembles, Religious Education lessons, visits to places of worship that are important to different faiths as well as PSHCe lessons which reinforce the message of tolerance and respect for others. Members of different faiths and religions in our school community are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
