School Introduces "Park and Stride" |
|
As part of the School Travel Plan, we have introduced an incentive scheme to encourage children to walk to School, working with Leicestershire County Council's Star Walkers scheme. The scheme rewards all children who walk to school, either from home or from one of the 4 designated car areas. Every child in the school has been given a passport, which they hand in to their class teacher when ever they walk to school. The passport is stamped by the School - when five stamps have been awarded, the child gets a bug and a star on the chart; after twenty stamps, the child receives a pencil and a star on the chart.

The School Travel Plan highlighted a number of concerns with the roads around the school, such as the increased congestion caused by parking outside the school gates. To reduce this, the scheme uses an exclusion zone covering an area within ten minutes walk to the school. Parents are asked not to bring cars into this area unless absolutely necessary, when they can obtain a permit to use one of the four designated car parks. The scheme will help heighten awareness of traffic amongst the children, and also help meet the recommended target of 20 minutes exercise per day. |

As the Travel Plan develops, we hope to achieve more improvements on the roads around the School. Examples include the creation of a 20 mph speed limit on the School aproaches, which is now awaiting agreement from the Council, and the provision of a Pelican Crossing on Central Road. |
