Xenotransplantation debate

As part of our Blood Heart topic, we have been reading Pig Heart Boy - written by the fantastic award – winning Malorie Blackman.

Even though we are only at the beginning of the book, we found ourselves with a fantastic opportunity to link our growing knowledge of xenotransplantation (the process of grafting or transplanting organs or tissues between members of different species) to our British Values by debating whether or not, this should be allowed.

By understanding what democracy is and how new laws are passed, we were able to put forth powerful arguments for and against, commenting on both the donor and the receiver’s quality of life before and after, and other ethical opinions and disputes the children needed to air!

Who won you ask? Well, you’ll have to come and speak to us for that answer!

A big thank you to Miss Davies for arranging the loan of the parliament box - the children had great fun learning all about the items and Edward particularly enjoyed being the Speaker!*

*The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. The Speaker is also responsible for maintaining order during a debate and may punish members who break the rules of the House.
