New EYFS Starters September 2021- Headteacher Presentation

WW1 exhibition

WW1 exhibition

For the past few weeks, Year 6 have had the honour of working closely with Coalville Heroes – a community funded project that acts as a bridge between organisations, businesses, schools and the local community to provide activities and opportunities for learning across North West Leicestershire. Their main focus has been to create an exhibition dedicated to the Famous Fifty, who were the first to volunteer from our area to fight in WW1.

Hugglescote were one of many the local schools to be involved and we were tasked with researching a soldier called John George Bennett- a 20-year-old man who sadly lost his life in the trenches in Belgium. So far, we have produced a life-size cut out that depicts his life before and during the war; using information about him to create a collage piece that will be exhibited within Coalville Market from 11th November until December 2nd.

Because of the children’s enthusiasm, we were also asked to take part in an additional art project where every child dedicated a piece of artwork to one of the soldiers and ‘hide’ it within Coalville. In conjunction with Darren Reynolds- a freelance street artist-  the idea was, whoever found this piece of art could keep it! – as long as they uploaded a picture of their new home to the Coalville Heroes’ official Facebook page. In addition to this, Darren also demonstrated his skills by creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art that will now be proudly displayed in our new revamped KS2 library!

Some of the children also had the amazing opportunity to go and visit the exhibition and one of our dear students was asked to be interviewed by the BBC! This short clip was aired on 10th November on BBC East Midlands local news.

We are so proud of the children who represented Hugglescote that day, and every child who has demonstrated great respect to a very mature subject thus far.
